Twin tip skis have 2 tips instead of one tip and one tail. Both the front and have back of the ski have the end turned up. This makes it easier to ski backwards or land a jump backwards. These type of ski are usually wider than most alpine skis and don’t have very much of a sidecut / shape.

Skiing backwards is called switchfoot or often just “switch.”

Twin tip skis are usually the ski of choice of freestyle skiers. You can ski backwards on normal skis if you want – they do not need to be twin tip skis to ski backwards.

From what I’ve seen, some of the coolest ski designs lately have been on twin tip skis. Some have pictures on them and the brand name of the ski is often more hidden, compared with normal, all-mountain alpine skis that usually feature the name brand.

If you’re new to skiing and over 18 years old, you’re probably going to start skiing on normal, alpine skis rather than twin tip skis. You can also rent them if you want to try them.
