What Do You Wear Under Your Ski Jacket?

Q & A

Knowing how to dress for a day of skiing depends on a number of factors. You want to be comfortable, not get too cold and certainly not get too hot.

First, of course, you should look at the weather forecast. Find out the temperature, wind speed, wind chill and how the skies will be. Having the sun out will help keep you warm. If there’s a lot of wind, you’ll want to make sure you’re protected since exposed skin to the cold wind will make you cold. If it’s very cold and there’s wind, then you’ll need to totally cover up.

Second, take a look at your ski jacket. Does it fit you well and allow you to move around? It should. Make sure the zipper works and see how far it zips up. Having wind or snow come down the front of it can make you cold, so you’ll want to wear a shirt that goes up your neck – either a little or a lot. Does your ski jacket have vents? The vents can be opened to help you cool off, so if you have them, feel free to dress a little warmer, knowing you can easily cool off.

Your base layer is important. Cotton is no longer a good choice since, although it keeps your warm, it also traps moisture right near your skin. Since it cannot evaporate, the moisture stays there and keeps cooling you, so you can get really cold that way. Cotton is fine for a mid layer. For a base layer, you want a synthetic like a nylon based material (microfiber) that draws moisture away from your skin. You will sweat from moving or from the sun beating down on you.

After you have a good base layer, you can go with a cotton layer if you like. This will help keep you warm. On top of that, you can wear fleece to keep you even warmer if it’s a cold day.

And then you’ll wear your ski jacket.

Make sure you wear a base layer with long sleeves since your arms may sweat, too. A fleece that zips up is nice because you can easily unzip it if you run indoors or when you go in to eat.

Some people will choose to wear a ski jacket that’s just a shell while others (most people) wear one that has some insulation. I prefer an insulated ski jacket since I know I can always go down to just a t-shirt and ski jacket if needed and that’s fine.

Happy skiing!
