What Do You Need for a Ski Trip?
Ski Vacations
Since you have to deal with the cold weather when you go skiing, you need to be prepared. Not having extra gloves or even tissues on hand can make the day a little miserable. Plan ahead and you’ll have the most fun!
Here’s a list and some ideas of things to bring on your ski trip:
- Skis, poles, ski boots and a snowboard / snowboard boots – if you’re into that kind of thing. Get everything tuned up and waxed. Check everything over. If you’re renting, then find out about rental rates.
- Gloves – bring extra gloves, too, even if it’s not snowing or raining. Perspiration from your hands can also make gloves wet and cold.
- Dress in layers. Base layer, mid layers and your ski jacket and ski pants. Don’t forget socks (pack extra socks just in case).
- Hat and helmet.
- Ski mask, gator and scarf.
- Goggles and/or sunglasses.
- Sunscreen and lip balm.
- Snacks – bring fruit, snack bars, nuts, energy bars and water.
- Your ID, wallet, cash, credit cards.
- A good attitude!
Be Prepared
You really want to be prepared for whatever kind of weather may come. Often, the conditions at the top are much different from the bottom. I always have my ski mask in my jacket – just in case. Having snack bars (Nature Valley!) in your jacket is convenient because you can have one on the ski lift.
Pick a Meeting Place
When you get to the ski resort and if you’re in a group or family, you should pick a meeting place and a definite time to check in just so that you can keep track of everyone. Cell phone and those small walkie talkies can also come in handy for keeping track of everyone.
Start Skiing and Boarding
If you haven’t been out for a while, take it slow. Hit the easy slopes for a half hour or more and just get used to it again. And ski and snowboard lessons are really good to take. You could be doing it wrong and don’t know it. Learning to ski the right way makes you more efficient, which means it’ll be easier, which means you’ll be better able to keep up with everyone else and not be as sore the next two days. Really. Take a lesson!
Keep Hydrated
Being out in the cold, you might not notice that your body is working and using energy. Well, it is. Plan to take breaks to warm up, use the bathroom and grab something to drink or eat. Not just a sip of water, but have a water bottle and drink at least half of it. Your body needs water. You’ll feel better.
Be Safe
Make sure you’re following the Responsibility Code. Be courteous of others. Don’t skip in line. Make it fun for everyone. Know where ski patrol is in case you need help or need to tell someone else where it is. Pay attention on ski lifts you have not used before. Watch for changing weather conditions. Keep good distance between you and other skiers. And know how to turn and stop!
Travel Information and Help
To find a good place to ski with good rates, there are a number of resources available. I suggest getting on the e-newsletter mailing list of several resorts that you would like to go to and ski travel websites that offer ski vacation packages. They will often have special deals and they will send them to you when they become available. I love to travel and love it even more when I get a great deal. Travel agents can help, too, since they may have some special offers available as well. Many websites also offer travel help and useful information for planning a great ski travel vacation.
Have Fun!
Skiing and snowboarding should be fun. Don’t try to ski perfectly – just have fun out there. Enjoy your time playing in the snow – it’s awesome!
