What to Look for in a Ski Hat – The 411 on the Ski Hat

Ski Hats

It’s common knowledge that it needs to be cold out for there to be snow that you can ski or snowboard on. Our bodies seem to like a higher temperature than that, so we can stay warm by putting on a few layers. Wearing winter clothing like ski jackets, pants and gloves helps but what about our heads?

For our heads, we should do what mom always told us and wear a ski hat. You need one that’s insulated but won’t get you too warm. It should not make you sweaty but yet it needs to not get soaking wet when exposed to falling snow – or when you fall down in the snow. That’s a lot to ask but we have the technology! We can rebuild it!

ski-hatWhen checking out stores for a ski hat, you’re going to find that they’re made from a variety of materials. There’s your standard wool. There’s also materials like acrylic, polyester fleece, mirco fleece and other natural or synthetic materials. For most days, you’ll want one that isn’t too thin but also not too thick. You want to keep a lot of heat in but you also want some to escape so that you don’t get too sweaty.

In case you don’t know, wearing a baseball hat / cap for skiing doesn’t really work. You will lose your hat instantly when you start moving down the slope. They are nice to have for wearing after you go skiing – like when you hit the bar later.

So the task right now is to find the right ski hat for you, your kids and everyone in your family.

Ski Hat Types

There are all kinds of ski hats. There are your basic round, crochet or knitted ski hats that just come down to your ears or there are some really awesome fun ones, too. Some fun ones include:

  • Spike hats
  • Jester hats
  • Snake hats / long tail ski hats
  • Helmet covering hats
  • Beanie hats
  • Fuzz hats
  • Fauna hats
  • Dreadlocks hats
  • Fur ski hats
  • Braided tassel hats

I had a friend that put some battery powered Christmas lights around his pointy green ski hat and it became a Christmas tree on skis, sort of. So you can have some fun with your ski hat if you’re creative and there are lots of fun ski hats being made, which you can buy at a store or online.

Here are some more things to think about when you are looking at the different types of hats:

  • Coverage – You may want to get a ski hat that covers your ear or has ear flaps for those really cold days.
  • Material – Is it thick or thin? Does it allow air to get in or out? Is it waterproof?
  • Cleaning – Is it easy to clean or does it have to be dry cleaned?
  • Size – Try it on to see if it’s too tight. Your hat may shrink, so make sure it’s not too tight.
  • Color / Style – Does it look good on you? There are many styles, so you should have no problem finding one that’s cool for you.
  • Ski Mask – Some ski hats will also turn into a ski mask.

You should have a few hats in your bag full of ski equipment. Temperatures and conditions are going to change. You want to be prepared so that you are able to have fun and stay on the snow longer.

Ski Helmets

I personally think ski helmets are a great idea. You may be able to control yourself but you can’t control people who might come barreling into you. So I think everyone should wear a helmet when skiing or snowboarding. You can wear a hat under your helmet or there are even hats that cover your helmet. And you also just want to get a ski hat for when you’re outside and not wearing your helmet. So no matter how you look at it, a ski hat is a must.

Conclusion

ski-hat2You’ve got a head, it’s cold out, so put a hat on it. Take mom’s advice so that you don’t get sick out there. When you’re sick, you can’t be out on the snow. You can find a ski hat that’s cool looking, so there’s really no excuse not to get one. Get a few of them for different conditions and get one that looks good on ya!
