Something like the Meteor or Elios helmets could be used for both climbing and snowsports since they have a foam liner which will absorb the force from a head-vs-object collision as well as the force from a dropped object such as a rock or piece of hardware. Few helmet manufacturers make a true multi-sport helmet that will work for skiing and climbing and if you do get injured using a climbing helmet while skiing they may say that the helmet wasn’t designed for that sport, but if you need head protection and can’t afford two helmets, a climbing helmet is better than no helmet at all.
A helmet like the Ecrin Rock is designed only to protect the head from falling objects or light bumps in caves or under overhanging rock. It has no foam to cushion the head in the event of impact.
Climbing helmets lack several useful features, such as:
* not designed to be used with goggles
* generally don´t cover the ears (for warmth)
* don´t cover the back of the head as fully
* no adjustable ventilation
A climbing helmet is designed to protect you from falling pebbles… not the kind of thing you wear a helmet for on the slopes.
I take the point of the earlier poster about the rock climbing helmet not being specifically designed for skiing but have to disagree on a couple things. My climbing helmets provide good full head coverage. I often will adjust the inside straps to wear them during the winter with a polartec hat underneath. Rock climbing hats are solid shell (no ventilation). They aren’t just for protecting from rock fall but are also designed to provide some protection if and when you take a fall yourself. I wouldn’t hesitate from using the rock climbing helmet for skiing.
is it ok? first read the warning literature that accompanies the particular helmet. that should give you an idea. ultimately it’s you who decides what to wear. i’ve seen people wear moto helmets if for no other reason because it just looks cool. personally, i’d wear an helmet that is designed for the particular sport.

It depends on the helmet.
Here’s a link to the Petzl website to use as an example.
