  1. What you wear depends on the temps. Waterproof pants or snow pants are a must, and if you do not have snow pants you can wear a pair of long underwear and waterproof pants on top. Wear a winter coat and wear atleast 2-3 layers. Layer so you can take layers off and cool down if you want to. Big tip, conserve your energy. Don’t waste your energy skating on your skis on the flats or going places you don’t have to. You will need that energy to learn how to turn and stop. Remember, keep your weight centered over the balls of your feet, eyes on the HILL(not on your feet), and hands out in front of you. Steer your feet using your toes and heels to turn. Turn your right foot toward the left to go left and turn your left foot to the right to go right. This will cause your skis to make a triangle(pizza). You can make a larger triangle or pizza and stop. Use TURNING to stop, and only use pizza if you absolutely have to. Good luck and have fun!

PS: Make sure to get the right size ski boot. It should be tight, but you should be able to wiggle your toes.

  2. Northerly Wind

    What to wear:

If it’s your first time, I suggest renting or borrowing a helmet. This way you’ll keep safe in case of any accidents. However, if you don’t have the means, I strongly suggest a nice thick HAT.

Moving down, wear a comfortable long-sleeved, followed by a hoody or jacket. Make sure it doesn’t have too many bells and whistles, otherwise it will be very uncomfortable. Preferably no hood on the sweater, as it can be uncomfortable as well.

If you have snow pants! WEAR THEM, and underneath wear trackpants. Take long socks and wrap them around carefully the bottom edge of the pants. If you have longjohns, wear those! IF YOU DON’T have snow pants, wear really thick sweatpants and socks underneath.

DO NOT WEAR JEANS. they can get soaked and are really uncomfortable for any sport.

    Otherwise, have fun!

If it’s your first time and you’re not getting a lesson – STICK TO THE BEGINNER HILLS. It sounds stupid but it will make sure you and others are safe. That said, make sure
    1) YOUR BALANCE IS FORWARD.
This is essential, make sure your weight is primarily on the front of your foot/boot. Keep your hands on your knees, this will help.
    2) STAY IN A SNOWPLOW, or pizza
This is a ^ shape, make that with your skiis, but try not to let them cross, because it will be hard to untangle them if you do.
Make it really wide at the back, and narrow at the front like /\. Push out your heels, and go straight down the hill SLOWLY. If you’re going to fast, PUSH OUT YOUR HEELS MORE.
    3) LOOK DOWN THE HILL, not at your skiis!
Otherwise you might catch and edge and fall, it won’t be pretty.

If those are working well for you, you might want to try turning. Basically, you put pressure on the opposite knee/foot you want to turn and point your toes in the turning direction. However, don’t try this unless you’re confident with your snow plow.

Best of luck and have lots of fun~
