About to Go Snow Skiing for First Time. or Should I Board?

Your Questions

I have no experience with skiing or snowboarding (or water skiing and wake boarding for that matter), so my abilities are awful to begin with. Would I better suited to to begin on skis or a snow board? Why? Do you have any advice for me? Thanks!

What a load of baloney. Boarding is about 4 times easier to learn and do, and about 4 times as painful over the first coupla days. Skiing is far more versatile – you can do groomers, park and freeride, as well as more easily do backcountry, extreme, bumps and race. It’s also faster (if you want that) and more sophisticated (not for showing off, lovey, but for interest and involvement). Good skiing is a challenge to aspire to, not just a skill but an art. Boarding is somewhat of a quick and easy imitation. However the feeling you get is different – if feels freer and is in itself the greatest of fun when conditions/terrain are right.

Skiing is easier going to begin with, but the learning curve is a long shallow one. You won’t fall over much. You’ll learn how to do linked wedge or plough turns quickly. You’ll be able to ski the easiest slopes in a couple of days. In 1 week you’ll be doing easy runs using a faster form of these turns or a weak, unstable, untidy parallel. In 8 weeks you’ll be a fairly capable skier and able to get about most of the mountain ok (groomers anyways). It’ll be fairly obvious that you’re not a very experienced skier. Boarders find learning to ski easier.

Boarding has a steep learning curve. You will fall over much. Pad your butt and other bits esp if learning on quite hard snow. Once you’re able to link turns you’re away. In 2 days you’ll be doing easy runs. In 1 week you’ll be boarding all the groomers except where there are bumps/moguls/steeps. In 2 weeks you’ll be a fairly capable boarder and able to get about most of the mountain ok. No one except the cognoscenti will really know how long you’ve been doing it. Skiers find learning to board easier.

  2. snowboarding is a lot harder than skiing. it takes more balance than skiing. skiing is also safer. and easier to learn when first starting off. but try both to see which one you like more

  3. I’d pick skiiing. Snowboarding is much harder. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to pick up snowboarding.

snow boarding is a lot harder but try and once u get the hang of it then u should snowboard all the time! =D

  5. i agree with the other people skiing is a lot easier but at the same time once you get the hang of snowboarding i personally think it is way more fun than skiing. But being that this is your first time, i would have to agree with the others and say that skiing is safer and easier to learn.

  6. It really depends on what your truly interested in. There are some people that immediately want to try one or the other. Choose the one you really are more interested in.
Yes snowboarding is harder to pick up. However, I found that while skiing may be easier to pick up, its much harder to "get better". It takes time to get really good at all the different aspects of skiing and not as long for snowboading once you pick it up. Hope that helps!

  7. I personally do both, and would say that learning to ski is much more enjoyable than learning to snowboard. So if your looking for a sort of one time experience with snow sports I would recommend skiing, because at the end of the day you will feel like you are actually sort of comfortable skiing. Snowboarding on the other hand can take many trips to get comfortable with, and you will spend more time lying on the snow. However, I feel that snowboarding is more rewarding in the long run, until you get really good on skis.

  8. No doubt, skiing would be much easier. I can do both, and snowboarding is just so much more fun to me! and when you crash when your skiing, it’s much much more painful. And if you truely want to snowboard, I would choose that instead. But being a beginner, I guess stick with the skiing, haha. good luck!

  9. skiing is so much easier then boarding

now im boarding and it was so hard to learn, i still AM learning some things .
